Large company or start-up: how to choose your next IT employer?
Regardless of your expertise, the context in which you do your IT work has a great influence on your daily reality. If you’re thinking about changing jobs, ask yourself the following three questions to help you choose your next IT employer.
Do you want to be versatile or specialised?
Generally speaking, IT jobs in a start-up company are more hands-on, as the teams are smaller, whereas in a large company, each person has more of a specific role, which allows for more in-depth development of IT expertise.
What benefits are most important to you?
Make a list of the benefits you’re looking for, and rank them in order of importance to you.
Some examples of benefits related to a job:
- Job security
- Career path opportunities within the company
- Insurance for your family
- A flexible schedule
- The possibility of being a shareholder of the company
- Potentially unlimited vacations
- A pension fund
- Flexibility in the execution of your tasks
Then look at your list of priorities and ask yourself what kind of employer would respond most effectively.
In start-ups, everything has to be built, which generally implies more flexibility, but at the expense of a certain job security. In large companies, or with public organizations, the hierarchy in place usually brings more processes and stricter rules, but also tangible benefits, such as a comprehensive benefits program.
What impact do you want to have?
This is the famous “why” question: why do you want to do this job? What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to contribute to? Do you aspire to an influential role?
While there are as many answers as there are career paths in IT, identifying your career ambitions will help you make the right choice.
An IT job in a mandate: the best of both worlds
Each type of employer offers advantages and disadvantages. The question is, what are you looking for? But have you also thought about an outsourcing job?
The formula of an IT outsourcing job gives you access to competitive benefits, while allowing you to contribute to diversified projects, often with a concrete and direct impact. At ITI Resource Placement, our IT specialists are mandated by more than 200 different clients (large companies, government agencies, start-ups), to carry out a project or fill a vacant position.
