How to Prepare Well for an Interview for an IT Position?

You are ready to take your IT career to the next level, and you have secured an interview for a coveted position. To reduce your stress and increase your chances of getting the IT job, our IT recruitment experts share their best tips and trade secrets with you.

Before the Interview

Do your Research

  • Research the company: its offerings, products, vision, etc.
  • Understand what the job posting requires: the sought-after skills, the necessary abilities, concrete experience, etc.
  • Find out who will be conducting your interview: a recruiter, direct manager, or a technically inclined colleague?
  • Find out about the hiring process. Will you have to take a technical test? And if so, at what stage in the hiring process will it take place?

Revise your technical knowledge

  • If you do not use the required skills daily, take the time to review the tools and concepts.
  • Prepare concrete examples of your experience with the technologies mentioned in the IT job posting.
  • You might have to perform a task to demonstrate your technical skills. Are you ready?

Refine your soft skills

Think about situations where you have highlighted skills mentioned in the job offer. For example, consider moments that could help you answer the following questions:

  • When did you recently solve a complex problem?
  • How do you handle conflicts or a technical disagreement?
  • When did you quickly learn a new technology?
  • Do you demonstrate good teamwork?
  • How do you work under pressure?
  • When did you last show adaptability?

Take the time to prepare yourself

  • According to the job description, imagine a list of potential questions and practice answering them by structuring your responses effectively, for example, using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
  • Think about your “why.” An honest, well-crafted response that is concretely tied to the company or the IT position will earn you points.
    • Why do you want to work at this company? Research to support your answer.
    • Why do you want to get this IT job?

During the Interview

Demonstrate your professionalism and interest in the IT position

  • Be clear in your responses, take your time and try to manage your stress.
  • Ask for clarification if a question seems vague.
  • Ask questions about the team, projects, and technical challenges.
  • Express how you can add value to this role, the team, or the company.

After the Interview

Remind them of your interest

  • Take the time to thank your interviewers by sending them an email, ideally within 24 hours of the interview.
  • After a week without any news, follow up politely to check on the progress of the process.
