Technology tools for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Saint-Eustache school Terre des jeunes serves a diverse student body, including children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The ITI Foundation has provided the school with adapted technological equipment to help it meet the special challenges its students face.

Like all students, young people with ASD need motivation to succeed in school, as well as adapted tools. However, they also have special limitations and challenges that the school must take into account. Technological tools are widely used with students with ASD, particularly to help them become more independent, learn to read and write, and develop social and communication skills.

Our ASD students are between the ages of 6 and 10, and it’s easy for them to lose focus. After a full day in class, it can be a bit of a cognitive overload. The tech tools have done a good job helping these students stay on task and prevent meltdowns.

Students can use the new tablets and noise-cancelling headphones provided by the ITI Foundation to settle down at daycare by playing educational games adapted to their development level. This transition to technology tools has helped them become less rigid and stay interested in school.

Digital tools a must in education

Technology can be a powerful teaching tool for students, no matter what the challenge faced or the interest being developed. Yet the education community has been slow to incorporate more tech into educational approaches, often due to a lack of budget and resources.

Whether it’s apps to promote learning in students with difficulties or programming and robotics equipment, access to technology should not hinge on the financial resources of the school or the parents. That is why the ITI Foundation is committed to helping Quebec youth by providing equipment, expertise and support to roll out tech projects and tools in the province’s schools.

About the ITI Foundation

Through its collaboration with public and community organizations, it invests time, equipment and expertise to provide IT where it is needed most. Thanks to the dedication of its teams, the Foundation does more than provide infrastructure; it helps communities at all stages of their IT projects. By supporting innovative, engaging, lifelong learning projects in the community, the ITI Foundation aims to help close the gap between young people who have access to IT and those who do not.
