The ITI Foundation Supports Students at the Tshishteshinu School

It all started with a call to take part in the Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie to raise funds to refurbish the playground of the Tshishteshinu School, located in the community of Uashat Mak Mani-utenam, a traditional Innu site near Sept-Îles.

Jonathan Legault, ITI’s President, agreed to take on the challenge and was joined by Eric Martin (Metal7), Pascale Lavoie (PwC), Maxime Detraux (PwC) and Guillaume Duchesneau (Ingeno). Together, the team raised over $42,500, including more than $30,000 for the Tshishteshinu School playground.

Through the playground refurbishment, the school and local community wanted to encourage young people to be more active. In discussions with management, Jonathan inquired about the school and the local families’ technological needs. The school quickly confirmed it was lacking the computers it needed to help and motivate students struggling with reading and writing learning disabilities.

That is how the ITI Foundation ended up donating 30 laptops to the Tshishteshinu School. The new computers will be equipped with immersive reading and writing tools, and used in the classroom or loaned to school families.

Young people with learning disabilities need to experience success. Technological tools make this possible, in addition to supporting their development. Our teachers and professionals will also be able to use the computers to try out learning tools not yet used in our school. It opens new doors for us.

Although life for young people in Innu communities can be quite different from that of many young people in Quebec, with regard to technology, their reality is in fact quite similar.

Many young people have access to cell phones at home, but they’re not always used in a learning environment or with supervision. By loaning laptops to certain families, we’re going to make sure children can really benefit.
